New Albany, Ind. – December 15, 2015 – To enhance the laboring options available at Baptist Health Floyd, the hospital recently purchased a Porter Nitronox System for the Birthing Center. “Nitrous Oxide is a mild analgesic that offers pain reduction for our patients looking for an alternative to narcotic use during labor, said Emily Banet, MSM, BSN, RN, RNC-OB, CCE, manager of the Baptist Health Floyd Birthing Center.
Nurse mid-wife Carla Layne, APRN, CNM first introduced this new analgesic to the team at Baptist Health Floyd. They completed an extensive review of the nitrous system, which has been widely used in Europe for decades. This technology uses a blend of 50 percent nitrous oxide and 50 percent oxygen for analgesia and reduced anxiety during labor. Nitrous oxide is a colorless gas that is absorbed by inhalation and is a safe and effective tool for laboring mothers.
The experience of labor is different for all women, and their response to its discomforts is highly individual. Therefore, the physicians, certified nurse midwife, nurses and staff at the Baptist Health Floyd Birthing Center believe their moms should have access to a variety of approaches to promote comfort and reduce anxiety throughout labor. “Nitrous has been proven to reduce anxiety related to the labor process. The duration of its effects are short, so it is safe for use during any stage of the labor and delivery process,” said Banet.
The Baptist Health Floyd Birthing Center offers a diverse range of services dedicated to advancing the health of mothers and babies. The Center strives to meet individual wishes and provide options for mothers, including a certified nurse midwife, doulas, garden tubs for labor and kangaroo care (skin to skin bonding) after birth. State-of-the-art Labor and Delivery and Postpartum unit are available where mothers can deliver their babies with assurance that their needs will be attended to by a compassionate and well-trained staff.
