Recently, Baptist Health Floyd Medical Group – Orthopedics launched an Accelerated Joint Replacement Recovery Program to help hip, knee and shoulder joint replacement patients recover more quickly with less pain. The accelerated approach uses a combination of medications and anesthesia techniques that work on many different receptors both in the brain and the periphery to reduce pain. The combinations also work to decrease the amount of narcotic pain medication used, which helps limit side effects, such as nausea and vomiting.
This protocol is better than previous methods because patients have pain control with very little narcotic use, wake up from surgery feeling better and are able to go home sooner. They also achieve better range of motion due to the fact that they have less pain.
Anterior approach total hip replacement patients in the program typically go home the day after surgery. Total knee replacement patients generally go home the second day after surgery.
